What is on this list?

This page collects every adverb in the data set whose base form starts with M, one card per word. The words come from Princeton WordNet, the same lexical database behind the matching pages for adjectives, nouns, verbs, animals and foods already on this site, so if you have used one of those before you already know the shape of this one: a grid, a count, a search box. Each card pairs the adverb with a short definition, which is the detail that separates this page from a plain word dump — you see what the word means, not just that it exists and starts with M.

The count above the grid says exactly how many M adverbs made the cut, and it varies a lot from letter to letter because adverbs cluster unevenly through the alphabet. The search box filters within the letter as you type, matching either the word itself or the text of its definition, so you can search for a meaning when you cannot remember the exact word, or narrow a long list down to a specific sense. Below the grid is a row of links to the other twenty-five letters, so you can move across the full set from A through Z without going back to a hub page first.

How this list was built

1. Sourced from Princeton WordNet 3.1. The words on this page start as the 3,736 single-word adverb entries in Princeton WordNet, a lexical database built by linguists at Princeton University rather than scraped from other word lists. Multi-word entries such as “of course” were set aside before anything was split by letter.
2. Filtered by how often WordNet found each word actually used. WordNet's semantic concordance is a body of text that lexicographers hand-tagged sense by sense, and every adverb entry records how many of its senses were found there. Keeping only entries with at least one attested sense cuts the 3,736 down to 1,285 across all 26 letters.
3. Defined with WordNet's own glosses. Each definition on this page is WordNet's own gloss for the word, trimmed to the definition itself with the usage examples removed. None were rewritten or invented by hand.

What is missing, and why

Adverbs are the smallest and most loosely defined of the four major word classes covered by this site. WordNet lists roughly 3,700 single-word adverbs against more than 56,000 nouns, so a page like this one is short by nature, not because the M entries were trimmed after the fact. The set also leans heavily on -ly forms — three quarters of the words here end that way — because adding -ly to an adjective is how English builds most of its adverbs. If you came looking for something other than adjective-plus-ly, the non-ly entries are the smaller and usually more interesting half of what is on this page.

A few other limits are worth stating plainly. Multi-word adverbs such as “of course”, “at last” and “for good” function as adverbs but are not single words, so they are not here. The frequency filter is corpus-based rather than web-based, built from text tagged decades ago, so a handful of adverbs common today are missing and a few dated ones remain; WordNet is also American English, so a British spelling can be absent from the letter you expect. Four letters would be nearly or entirely empty under the frequency filter alone — J, K and Y have almost nothing above it and Z has nothing at all — so those pages are topped up with entries from below the threshold, each one marked as such on the card. X is the one letter that could not be topped up, because WordNet has no adverb beginning with X at any frequency whatsoever.

Why is it free?

This page is static: it was generated once from WordNet and does not call a model, store anything, or talk to a server when you load it, so there is no per-visit cost to pass on. There is nothing to upload, nothing to sign up for, no watermark on anything you copy, and no paywall between you and the M adverbs you came for.
