If you came here looking for animals that start with S, what follows is a set built from a public database and filtered by a stated rule, not the first dozen names a blog post could recall.

How this list was built
- Pulled from Wikidata. Every animal on this page started as a structured query against Wikidata, the public-domain (CC0) knowledge base behind much of Wikipedia's infobox data, run once per animal class — mammals, birds, reptiles, ray-finned fish, amphibians, crustaceans, arachnids, and sharks and rays — because a single query across the whole animal kingdom times out on the public endpoint.
- Filtered by how widely each animal is known. An animal qualifies when its Wikidata item is linked from at least 40 different Wikipedia language editions. That is a proxy for people across many languages actually having a name for it, which is why the page holds the lion and the narwhal and drops the hundreds of thousands of described species only a taxonomist would recognise.
- Filled in the words the first query cannot see, then deduplicated. That first pass finds vertebrates well and invertebrates barely at all, because Wikidata records a common name on a species but labels a high-level group by its scientific name — the query returns Formicidae and Lepidoptera rather than ant and butterfly, and words like bee, octopus and zebra are separate concepts sitting outside the taxonomic chain entirely. Those are added by a second route: the scientific name is resolved to its Wikidata item, then paired with the ordinary English word for it. Finally, one animal gets one card per letter, since many carry several names — the item’s own label decides which to show, and a Latin name never wins over an English one. All of that is automatic; what followed was spot-checking, not a reading of all 2,871 entries, and this page would rather say so than claim a level of curation it does not have.
What is missing, and why
Invertebrates are thinner than vertebrates here, and the reason is structural rather than careless. The taxonomic query that finds mammals and birds so well returns almost nothing usable for insects, molluscs and spiders: Wikidata attaches a common name to a species, but labels a high-level group by its scientific name, so it offers Culicidae where a reader wants mosquito. The everyday invertebrate words were therefore added by a second method, which covers the ones people actually list — ant, bee, beetle, butterfly, crab, octopus, snail — but not the long tail of individual species behind them. If a specific beetle or sea snail is missing from S, that is why.
Some letters are also genuinely short of animal names, and no amount of querying changes that. X is the extreme case: at the normal threshold it produced nothing at all, so its handful of entries were admitted under a lower one and marked accordingly — any list claiming dozens of X animals is padding with genus names or words that merely contain an x. Q, U and Z are thin for the same honest reason. Two further judgement calls are worth naming: a group word like antelope or monkey covers many species rather than one, so whether it belongs on a letter page is a decision rather than a fact; and an animal with several common names can legitimately appear under more than one letter, since a puma is also a cougar and a mountain lion.
Why is it free?
This is a static page: the list was built once from public Wikidata and is served the same way to every visitor, so there is no per-visit cost to pass on. There is nothing to upload because nothing of yours is involved, no account to create, no watermark, and no paywall between you and the animals that start with S — the same way every tool and list on this site works.
