What is a color wheel?
A color wheel arranges hues in a circle so their relationships become visible at a glance: which colors sit opposite each other, which sit close together, and which are evenly spaced around the ring. It is the tool designers, painters, and developers reach for when they need to turn one color decision into a coordinated set, rather than guessing at combinations one at a time. This one works the way a color picker in design software does, with hue running around the rim and saturation increasing from a pale center out to the fully saturated edge, so both properties are visible on a single dial instead of hidden behind sliders.
The point of a color wheel is to make color scheme logic something you can see rather than calculate. Instead of memorizing that a complementary pair sits 180 degrees apart or that a triad splits the circle into thirds, you place a marker and watch the related colors appear at the correct positions automatically. Move the base color and every other marker moves with it, holding the same angular relationship, so you can audition a scheme in seconds and see immediately whether it reads as calm, bold, or unbalanced before you commit to it anywhere else.
How to use the color wheel
- Pick a base color. Click or drag anywhere on the wheel; a marker follows your pointer, hue changes as you move around the rim, and saturation changes as you move toward or away from the center. If you already have a specific color in mind, type or paste its hex code into the hex field instead and the wheel jumps to that position.
- Choose a harmony rule. Use the row of scheme buttons to switch between complementary, analogous, triadic, split-complementary, square, and monochromatic. Smaller markers appear on the wheel showing exactly where each harmony color falls relative to your base, and the lightness slider underneath adjusts every color in the scheme together, so you can lighten or darken the whole palette without breaking the hue relationships.
- Copy your palette. The resulting colors appear as a row of cards, each showing its swatch, hex code, and hsl value. Click either value on a card to copy just that color, or use the Copy all button to copy the entire palette as a list of hex codes in one go.
The color schemes explained
Complementary pairs a color with the one directly opposite it on the wheel, giving you the strongest possible contrast between two hues. It is the scheme to reach for when something needs to pop against its surroundings, such as a call-to-action button on a page built around the opposite hue. Analogous groups colors that sit next to each other on the wheel, so the palette feels calm and cohesive rather than contrasting, which suits backgrounds, illustrations, or any layout where you want hues to blend into a single mood instead of competing. Triadic spaces three colors evenly around the wheel, giving vibrant contrast that still feels balanced because no single hue dominates by position alone, which is why it shows up often in branding that wants energy without looking chaotic.
Split-complementary takes the base color and pairs it with the two colors adjacent to its complement rather than the complement itself, keeping most of the contrast of a complementary pair while softening it — useful when a straight complementary scheme feels too harsh. Square places four colors evenly around the wheel, two complementary pairs at once, for a richer palette when a design has enough elements to support four hues without any of them reading as an accident. Monochromatic keeps a single hue and varies only lightness, producing a tight, disciplined system that is hard to get visually wrong, which makes it a safe default when you want variety within one color family rather than across several.
Honest limitations
This wheel is built on RGB and HSL, the model that describes light on a screen, where the complement of red is cyan. That is different from the traditional artist’s RYB wheel used for mixing paint, where red’s complement is green. Neither model is wrong — they answer different questions — and a palette generated here is built for screens, not pigment, so don’t expect it to match a color theory chart from a painting class. It is also worth knowing that HSL lightness is not the same as perceived brightness: yellow at hsl(60, 100%, 50%) looks far brighter to the eye than blue at hsl(240, 100%, 50%) even though the lightness number is identical, so a scheme that is mathematically correct can still look uneven once you actually look at it. Newer color spaces such as OKLCH exist specifically to fix this mismatch.
Harmony rules are conventions and starting points, not guarantees. A textbook-perfect triad can still look wrong once it is applied to a real layout, where proportion matters as much as hue choice; the usual advice is to let one color dominate and treat the rest as accents rather than giving all of them equal weight. The wheel also does not check contrast or accessibility — a complementary pair can look striking side by side as swatches and still be unreadable as text on a background, so run any combination you plan to use for text through a contrast checker separately. Monochromatic schemes flatten toward white and black at their lightness extremes, losing color entirely at the ends, and every value the wheel produces is sRGB, so how it actually looks still depends on your display’s calibration.
