How elven names are built

The house or lineage name that follows often carries an actual meaning rather than being a plain surname: a reference to a place, a craft, a natural feature, or an ancestor’s trait, since elven cultures in most fantasy settings treat a lineage name as a small piece of history rather than a label.

Many fantasy settings also give elves two names across a lifetime: a softer child name used within the family, and a second, more deliberate name taken or given later once the character has some sense of who they’ve become — worth keeping in mind if you’re naming a character at different life stages. The generator doesn’t sort results by subrace, but a generated name can be leaned in either direction: pick the softest, most melodic result and pair it with a nature-leaning lineage name for a wood elf feel, or take a sharper, more formal-sounding result and pair it with a lineage name that nods to craft or a noble house for something closer to a high elf.

Nothing you generate leaves your browser, and none of it is checked against any list of existing characters. That means duplicates happen across sessions, and it also means a name this tool produces might, by pure coincidence, match a character that already exists somewhere else.

The elvish name parts were written for this tool from general conventions associated with elven naming across fantasy fiction and tabletop games — nothing here is lifted from a publisher’s official tables, and if you’re naming a Dungeons and Dragons character specifically, note that D&D is a trademark of Wizards of the Coast and this tool isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by them.
