Meme Generator — Add Captions to Any Photo
Type a caption, drop in your photo, and download a watermark-free meme in seconds — nothing ever leaves your browser.
What is a meme generator?
A meme generator is a tool that lets you put text on top of a picture in the format everyone recognises as a meme: bold white letters with a black outline, one line stacked across the top of the image and another across the bottom. This one works the same way — pick a photo, type your top and bottom lines, and it draws them onto the image for you.
You do not need any design software to make a meme. This meme maker runs entirely as a page in your browser: choose an image, add text to a photo you already have, and caption an image in a few clicks. It is built for the common case — reacting to a photo, a screenshot or a still with a caption — rather than for editing beyond text.
How to use it
- Add your photo. Click Choose an image, or drag a picture onto the drop zone, or just paste one in with Ctrl+V.
- Write your captions. Type your top line in the Top text box and your bottom line in the Bottom text box, then pick a text size — Small, Medium or Large — toggle ALL CAPS if you want the classic shouty look, and choose White or Black for the text colour.
- Download the result. Check the live preview, then click Download PNG to save the finished meme — or Remove image to start over with a different photo.
No watermark, no account, nothing uploaded
Your picture never leaves your browser. When you choose a file, it is read directly off your device and drawn onto a canvas — a drawing surface built into the browser — where your captions are added on top of it. The finished PNG is generated straight from that canvas and handed to you as a download. At no point is the image sent to a server, uploaded anywhere, or stored.
That is also why there is no watermark. Sites that upload your photo to make a meme have server costs that processing brings, which is usually where the sign-up walls and paid watermark removals come from. Because everything here happens on your own machine, there is nothing to charge for and nothing to brand — no account, no sign-up, no remove-the-watermark upsell.
Bring your own image
This tool does not come with a library of templates. The famous meme templates — the reaction stills, the multi-panel comics, the film screenshots — are other people's photographs, and the large meme sites host searchable collections of them; this one does not. You bring your own image. If you have found a template somewhere else, save it to your device first and then upload it here. In exchange, nothing you add is sent anywhere and the download carries no watermark.
A few other honest limits are worth knowing. The classic meme look uses the Impact typeface, which ships with Windows and macOS; many Linux and Android devices do not have it installed, so the text falls back to another heavy sans-serif that looks close but not identical — whatever font your device uses gets baked permanently into the PNG you download. If you add an animated GIF, only its first frame is used, so you get a still meme rather than an animated one. The output is a PNG at your image's own resolution, and since PNG is lossless the file can end up larger than the JPEG you started with. Very large photos are capped at around 16 megapixels, because Safari on iOS will not reliably draw a canvas much bigger than that — so a 48-megapixel phone photo comes back slightly downsized rather than blank.
Why is it free?
This meme generator is free because it does not cost anything to run: all the work happens in your browser, not on a server, so there is no processing bill to recoup with an account, a watermark or a paid tier.
