Pig Latin Translator

Type English, get instant Pig Latin — with the real rules applied, not just "ay" stuck on the end.

What is Pig Latin?

Pig Latin is English's most famous word game: a mock language made by moving the beginning of each word to the end and adding “ay.” “Hello” becomes “ellohay,” “smile” becomes “ilesmay.” Generations of kids have used it as a playground code, and it survives in pop culture and in words that escaped into real English — “ixnay” (nix) and “amscray” (scram) are Pig Latin.

A Pig Latin translator applies the rules for you, instantly and consistently — which matters more than it sounds, because the rules have edge cases most people fumble.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste English text — the Pig Latin appears live as you type.
  2. Pick your dialectfor vowel-starting words: “apple” → “appleway” or “appleyay,” depending on the playground you grew up on.
  3. Copy the resultand send it to someone who owes you an “ellohay” back.

The rules this translator follows

Words starting with a consonant move their whole opening consonant cluster, not just the first letter: “smile” → “ilesmay,” “string” → “ingstray.” Words starting with a vowel just take a suffix: “apple” → “appleway.” The tricky ones are handled the traditional way: “qu” travels as one sound (“question” → “estionquay”), y counts as a consonant at the start of a word but a vowel inside it (“yellow” → “ellowyay,” “my” → “ymay”), and capitalization follows the word (“Hello” → “Ellohay,” ALL CAPS stays ALL CAPS). Punctuation, numbers, and vowel-less words like “hmm” pass through untouched.

Honest limitations

Two things this tool will not pretend to do. First, reverse translation: Pig Latin cannot be decoded unambiguously by a machine — “ayway” could be “way” or “yay,” and “atway” could be “at” or “twa” — so translating back reliably needs a human ear for which reading is a real word. Second, secrecy: Pig Latin is a game, not encryption — anyone who spent a week on an English-speaking playground decodes it in real time. If you need text people genuinely cannot read at a glance, that is a job for a different kind of tool entirely.
