What is a random name picker?

A random name picker takes a list of names, or anything else you want to choose between, and selects one or more of them at random. Paste your list into the box, one name per line or separated by commas, and the tool ignores any blank lines so a stray extra line break will not throw off the count. It is built for exactly the moment you need a random winner picker: drawing a raffle prize, deciding who goes first, or picking a name from a list of students, entrants or team members without anyone able to argue the process was rigged.

Set how many winners you want in the How many to pick field, and the tool returns that many results at once as a row of chips you can copy in a single click. A counter under the list box keeps a live count of how many names it has read, so you can check your paste went in correctly before you draw. Everything happens as soon as you press Pick — there is no separate submit step and no wait.

How to use it

1. Paste your list. Enter one name per line, or separate them with commas, in the text box; blank entries are ignored and the counter underneath shows how many names were read.
2. Set how many winners you want and whether picks are removed. Enter a number in the How many to pick field, and tick Remove picked names from the list if you plan to run more than one draw from the same list.
3. Press Pick and copy the results. Winners appear as chips below the box; use Copy all to copy every result at once.

Duplicates, multi-prize draws, and keeping a record

Within a single draw nobody can be picked twice, because the tool works by shuffling the whole list with a Fisher-Yates shuffle and taking names off the top, rather than picking one at a time and risking a repeat. That shuffle has been checked directly: run across every one of the 24 possible orderings of a four-name list, it produced each ordering with equal frequency, confirming the randomness does not favour names near the top or bottom of what you pasted.

One thing worth stating plainly: if a name appears twice in your list, it is treated as two separate entries with twice the chance of being drawn. That is exactly what you want for a raffle where some people hold two tickets, and exactly what you do not want if you pasted a list with accidental repeats — worth a glance at the counter before you draw. The Remove picked names from the list checkbox is what turns this into a proper multi-prize draw: tick it, draw first prize, and the winner is taken out of the pool before second prize is drawn from everyone remaining.

Because nothing is sent to a server or saved anywhere, your list never leaves your browser, which matters if it is a list of real people's names — but it also means there is no record afterward once the page is closed or reloaded. For a public draw where the result might get questioned later, film the screen while you draw, or use a service built to produce a signed, independently verifiable record, such as random.org.
