Unicode version

Blocks cover 303,808 of the 1,114,112 code points Unicode can address. The remaining 72.7% belongs to no block at all.

Blocks are nearly full — the empty space is between them, not inside them. Not one of the 346 is completely unassigned.

Which block is a character in?

Paste a character, or type a code point as U+1F600, 0x1F600 or 1F600. Two or more bare hex digits are read as a code point; a single character is read as that character, so A means the letter and U+A means the line feed.

346 blocks shown

Matches block names, ignoring case, spaces and hyphens. An exact name comes first, then names that begin with what you typed.

Unicode Blocks: All 346, With Ranges

Every Unicode block, its range, and how much of it Unicode has actually filled in.

What is a Unicode block?

A Unicode block is a named, contiguous range of code points set aside for a related group of characters. Basic Latin is the first, running from U+0000 to U+007F. Emoticons is the one most people have met without knowing its name, at U+1F600 to U+1F64F. There are 346 of them in Unicode 17.0.0, and this page lists all of them with their ranges.

Blocks are an organisational device rather than a technical one. A character's block tells you roughly what neighbourhood it was allocated in, which is genuinely useful for reading a hex dump, choosing a font subset, or writing a regular expression against a script. It does not tell you what the character does — that is what properties like General_Category and Script are for, and they cut across blocks freely.

The one hard rule is that blocks never overlap and every one begins and ends on a multiple of 16. All 346 sizes are a multiple of 16 with no exceptions, which is why you see ranges like U+2200 to U+22FF rather than anything ending on a round decimal number.

How to use this list

  1. Search by name. Type part of a block name into the search field. Case, spaces and hyphens are ignored, so “basiclatin” finds Basic Latin, and an exact match is ranked first.
  2. Or look up a character. Paste a character into the lookup box, or type a code point as U+1F600, 0x1F600 or 1F600. It tells you which block the character falls in, and the block's full range.
  3. Read the assigned column. Every row shows how many of the block's code points Unicode has actually given to a character. A block marked full has no room left for a future addition.

Blocks are nearly full — the empty space is between them

It is widely assumed that blocks are mostly half-empty, on the grounds that they are allocated in multiples of 16 and that reserving room for future characters is the point. We measured it against UnicodeData.txt and it is not true: the average block is 98.5% full, 87 of the 346 are completely full, and not a single one is completely empty.

The empty space is somewhere else entirely. Blocks cover 303,808 code points out of the 1,114,112 that Unicode can address — 27.3%. Nearly three quarters of the code space has never been carved into a block at all. So the picture is not a set of loosely-filled shelves; it is a small, densely packed area inside a very large empty room.

The paired fact is exact rather than approximate, and is the one to remember: all 299,382 assigned code points fall inside a block. Nothing Unicode has assigned lives outside the partition, so if the lookup box tells you a code point is in no block, it is telling you that nothing has been assigned there.

The emptiest blocks that are not empty are worth a look for a sense of scale. Lisu Supplement has a single character in a range of 16. Devanagari Extended-A has 10 of 96. These are the exceptions rather than the pattern.

What this list will not tell you

It has no character names in it, and that is deliberate. A complete index of Unicode by name is roughly 248 KB compressed, and — more to the point — only 13.5% of assigned code points have an individual name at all. CJK ideographs, Hangul syllables and private use areas are declared as ranges and get algorithmic names derived from their code point. A block list is the level at which the data is both complete and small, which is why this page exists in the shape it does.

The assigned counts come from UnicodeData.txt, and there is a trap in reading that file that is worth knowing if you ever process it yourself. It does not list CJK ideographs or Hangul syllables one per line. It writes a pair of rows whose names end in “, First>” and “, Last>”, standing for everything between. Counting rows instead of code points undercounts the assigned total by more than 250,000, because most of assigned Unicode lives inside those markers rather than on its own line.

Assigned also means allocated, not necessarily printable. Surrogates and the private use areas are counted here because Unicode has given them a purpose, which is why Private Use Area shows as completely full despite containing no characters anyone has standardised.

Finally, this is a snapshot of Unicode 17.0.0, dated 1 August 2025. A new version adds blocks and fills existing ones; it does not renumber or remove them, so an old copy of this table goes incomplete rather than wrong. The version is shown above the list so you can tell which you are reading.

Why is it free?

The whole table is a few kilobytes of data shipped with the page and searched in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, nothing is logged, and there is no account to make — so there is nothing to charge for.

No sign-up, no limits, and no watermark on anything you copy out.
