Atributo rel: todos los valores y dónde funciona cada uno

El registro de IANA y la tabla de link types de HTML, uno al lado del otro, con la columna que decide si tu atributo rel hace algo.

¿Qué es una relación de enlace?

Una relación de enlace es el valor del atributo rel: el stylesheet de un elemento link, el noopener de un enlace, el canonical que le dice a los buscadores qué URL preferir. Expresa qué es lo que hay al otro extremo del enlace respecto de lo que lo contiene.

IANA lleva el registro: 134 en el momento de generar esta página, cada una con su descripción y su documento de referencia. A diferencia de otros registros, este no tiene columna de estado; no hay Permanent ni Provisional, una relación simplemente está registrada o no lo está.

El estándar HTML mantiene aparte una tabla mucho más corta, de 27 link types, y esa tabla trae la columna que le falta al registro: en qué elemento se permite cada palabra clave. Esa columna es la que decide si el atributo rel que acabas de escribir hace algo o no.

Cómo usarlo

  1. Pega un valor de rel. El atributo entero, no una sola palabra: rel admite un conjunto separado por espacios, y aquí se parte como lo hace HTML, por cualquier espacio en blanco.
  2. Elige el elemento donde va. link, a y area, o form. La misma palabra clave puede tener sentido en uno y ser completamente inerte en otro, así que el elemento no es un detalle.
  3. Lee el veredicto de cada palabra. Obtienes qué hace ahí, o cuál de tres clases muy distintas de nada hace: se ignora en ese elemento, está registrada pero no es palabra de marcado, o no está en ninguna fuente.

El registro no es la lista de valores de rel

Pon las dos fuentes en paralelo y solo 26 nombres aparecen en ambas. Quedan 108 relaciones registradas —cuatro quintas partes del registro— que el estándar HTML no menciona jamás. No son errores: relaciones como describedby, api-catalog o predecessor-version son reales, las define su propio RFC y son correctas en una cabecera HTTP Link o en un feed de Atom. Sencillamente no son palabras clave de marcado, y un navegador que pinta una página no hace nada con ellas.

El tráfico va también en sentido contrario, para exactamente una palabra clave. expect, que HTML usa para el bloqueo de renderizado, no está en el registro de IANA. Es además la única entrada de toda la tabla clasificada como Internal Resource; el resto son Hyperlink, External Resource o Annotation.

Así que una página que liste el registro de IANA bajo un título como todos los valores de rel que puedes usar se equivoca en 108 filas, y una que presente la tabla de HTML como las relaciones de enlace se equivoca en otras 108. Esta conserva ambas y marca de qué fuente sale cada fila.

Dónde va la palabra importa tanto como si existe

rel="stylesheet" en un enlace no hace nada. stylesheet es un External Resource en un elemento link y no se permite en ningún otro sitio; y eso se generaliza: ninguna palabra clave es nunca un External Resource fuera de link, lo cual tiene sentido en cuanto reparas en que descargar un subrecurso es justo para lo que sirven los elementos link.

rel="noopener" en un elemento link tampoco hace nada. Toda la familia noopener, noreferrer, opener, nofollow, external, bookmark y tag solo se permite fuera de link —siete palabras en total— porque anotan una navegación que el usuario podría hacer, y un elemento link no lo es. Se cumple también la regla espejo: ninguna Annotation se permite nunca en un elemento link.

Dos distinciones más que conviene conocer. Siete palabras clave son body-ok, es decir, un elemento link que las lleve es válido dentro de body y no solo en head: dns-prefetch, modulepreload, pingback, preconnect, prefetch, preload y stylesheet. Y solo dos de las 27, preconnect y preload, tienen procesamiento definido cuando llegan en una cabecera HTTP Link en vez de en el marcado.

Lo que esta página no te va a decir

No te dirá que un valor de rel es inválido. HTML ignora por diseño las palabras clave que no reconoce, así que un valor desconocido no rompe nada: simplemente no surte efecto. Los microformatos y las convenciones propias de cada sitio se apoyan en eso, y por eso aquí se informa de lo que hace cada palabra en vez de aprobar o suspender tu atributo.

No cubre las convenciones propias de los buscadores más allá de lo que dicen las dos fuentes. Google y otros actúan sobre valores como sponsored y ugc según define su documentación, no el estándar HTML, así que ese comportamiento queda fuera de lo verificado aquí.

Y el registro es una instantánea, fechada bajo la tabla. Las relaciones se añaden continuamente, así que puede faltar alguna muy reciente, aunque una fila ausente y una registrada-pero-no-en-HTML se comportan igual en el navegador, lo que suaviza la consecuencia.

¿Por qué es gratis?

Los dos conjuntos de datos viajan con la página como unos pocos kilobytes, y la comprobación corre en tu propio navegador. Nada de lo que pegas se sube, no se registra nada y no hay cuenta que crear.
