Qu'est-ce qu'une relation de lien ?

Une relation de lien est la valeur de l'attribut rel : le stylesheet d'un élément link, le noopener d'un lien, le canonical qui indique aux moteurs quelle URL préférer. Elle dit ce qu'est la chose à l'autre bout du lien pour celle qui la contient.

L'IANA en tient le registre : 134 au moment où cette page a été générée, chacune avec sa description et son document de référence. Contrairement à d'autres registres, celui-ci n'a pas de colonne de statut — pas de Permanent ni de Provisional : une relation est enregistrée, ou elle ne l'est pas.

Le standard HTML tient à part une table bien plus courte, 27 link types, et cette table porte la colonne qui manque au registre : sur quel élément chaque mot-clé est autorisé. C'est cette colonne qui décide si l'attribut rel que vous venez d'écrire fait quoi que ce soit.

Comment l'utiliser

Collez une valeur de rel. L'attribut entier, pas un seul mot : rel accepte un ensemble séparé par des espaces, et il est découpé ici comme le fait HTML, sur n'importe quelle espace blanche.
Choisissez l'élément qui le porte. link, a et area, ou form. Le même mot-clé peut avoir un sens sur l'un et être totalement inerte sur l'autre : l'élément n'est pas un détail.
Lisez le verdict mot par mot. Vous obtenez ce qu'il fait là, ou lequel de trois riens très différents il fait : ignoré sur cet élément, enregistré mais pas un mot de balisage, ou dans aucune des deux sources.

Le registre n'est pas la liste des valeurs de rel

Alignez les deux sources : seuls 26 noms figurent dans les deux. Restent 108 relations enregistrées — quatre cinquièmes du registre — que le standard HTML ne mentionne jamais. Ce ne sont pas des erreurs : des relations comme describedby, api-catalog ou predecessor-version sont réelles, définies par leur propre RFC, et correctes dans un en-tête HTTP Link ou dans un flux Atom. Elles ne sont simplement pas des mots-clés de balisage, et un navigateur qui affiche une page n'en fait rien.

Le trafic va aussi dans l'autre sens, pour exactement un mot-clé. expect, que HTML emploie pour le blocage du rendu, n'est pas au registre de l'IANA. C'est également la seule entrée de toute la table classée Internal Resource, toutes les autres étant Hyperlink, External Resource ou Annotation.

Une page qui présente le registre de l'IANA sous un titre comme toutes les valeurs de rel utilisables se trompe donc sur 108 lignes, et une page qui présente la table de HTML comme les relations de lien se trompe sur 108 autres. Celle-ci garde les deux et signale d'où vient chaque ligne.

L'endroit du mot-clé compte autant que son existence

rel="stylesheet" sur un lien ne fait rien. stylesheet est une External Resource sur un élément link et n'est autorisé nulle part ailleurs — et cela se généralise : aucun mot-clé n'est jamais une External Resource hors de link, ce qui va de soi dès qu'on remarque que télécharger une sous-ressource est précisément la fonction des éléments link.

rel="noopener" sur un élément link ne fait rien non plus. Toute la famille noopener, noreferrer, opener, nofollow, external, bookmark et tag n'est autorisée qu'en dehors de link — sept mots-clés au total — parce qu'ils annotent une navigation que l'utilisateur pourrait effectuer, et un élément link n'en est pas une. La règle miroir tient également : aucune Annotation n'est jamais autorisée sur un élément link.

Deux distinctions de plus, utiles à connaître. Sept mots-clés sont body-ok : un élément link qui les porte est valide dans body et pas seulement dans head — dns-prefetch, modulepreload, pingback, preconnect, prefetch, preload et stylesheet. Et deux seulement des 27, preconnect et preload, ont un traitement défini lorsqu'ils arrivent dans un en-tête HTTP Link plutôt que dans le balisage.

Ce que cette page ne vous dira pas

Elle ne vous dira pas qu'une valeur de rel est invalide. HTML ignore par conception les mots-clés qu'il ne reconnaît pas : une valeur inconnue ne casse rien, elle reste simplement sans effet. Les microformats et les conventions propres à un site reposent là-dessus, et c'est pourquoi cette page rapporte ce que fait chaque mot-clé au lieu de recaler votre attribut.

Elle ne couvre pas les conventions propres aux moteurs de recherche au-delà de ce que disent les deux sources. Google et d'autres exploitent des valeurs comme sponsored et ugc selon leur propre documentation, pas selon le standard HTML : ce comportement sort de ce qui est vérifié ici.
