Delete Pages From a PDF

Mark pages to remove in a grid or type a print-style range, and download a PDF rebuilt from just the pages you kept — smaller, because the deleted pages' images and fonts leave with them.

How do you delete pages from a PDF?

Deleting pages from a PDF means producing a new file that has exactly the pages you want and none of the ones you don't, while everything else about the document, its text, its images, its layout, stays untouched. This tool does that entirely in your browser: drop a file onto the page or click to choose one, and nothing about it is uploaded anywhere. The PDF is opened, edited, and rewritten inside the tab you're already looking at.

Once the file loads you get a grid of numbered pages to click through, plus a text box that accepts the same shorthand a print dialog uses, like 1-3, 5, 8-. Mark pages in either one and the other updates to match, so you can scan visually or type a range, whichever is faster for the document in front of you. A running count shows how many pages will survive before you commit to anything, and when you download, the result comes back with its final page count and file size shown next to the button.

Deleting pages, step by step

  1. Add your PDF. Drop it onto the page or click to browse — the file loads and is read inside your browser tab, never sent to a server.
  2. Mark the pages to remove. Click pages in the grid, or type ranges like 1-3, 5, 8- into the text box; the grid and the box stay in sync, and a running count shows how many pages will be left.
  3. Download the rebuilt file. Get a new PDF containing only the pages you kept, along with its final page count and size.

Deleting pages does not shrink a PDF — unless the tool rebuilds it

Deleting pages from a PDF does not normally make the file smaller. The straightforward way to do it removes the page from the document's page tree and stops there — but everything that page referenced, its images, its embedded fonts, stays behind in the file as dead weight, because nothing on save goes back and clears out objects nobody points to anymore.

We measured this on a 20-page document where every page carried its own image. The original file was 831,603 bytes and held 20 image objects. Deleting ten of its pages the straightforward way produced a 10-page file of 831,572 bytes — still containing all 20 image objects. That's a saving of 31 bytes for removing half the document.

This tool works the other way round: it figures out which pages survive first, then copies only those into a brand-new document. Run the same 20-page file through it and delete the same ten pages, and the result is 409,943 bytes holding 10 image objects — 50.7 percent smaller.

The image-object count, not the byte count, is what actually proves the deletion happened. A smaller file could in principle just mean better compression on the same content. A file that contains ten image objects where it used to contain twenty has genuinely dropped what the deleted pages were carrying, and the size drop follows from that rather than from any change to how the remaining pages are stored.

Honest limits

Rebuilding the document from its surviving pages has a real cost: the new file does not inherit the original’s bookmarks, form fields, or document-level metadata, because those belong to the document as a whole rather than to any individual page.

What it does keep is the page content itself. Text, fonts, images, and vector art are copied exactly as they were, never re-rendered or re-compressed, so nothing loses quality in the process, and any rotation already applied to a surviving page carries across unchanged.

The tool won’t let you delete every page. A PDF with no pages left isn’t a document, and someone who’s marked all of them has almost certainly inverted their selection by mistake rather than meant to empty the file. Page numbers outside the document are handled the opposite way — ignored rather than flagged as an error, so a range like 8- against a 5-page file just selects whatever pages actually exist.

Deleting and extracting pages are the same operation looked at from opposite ends; the only thing that changes is which set of pages you have to name. Dropping three pages out of a two-hundred-page report is a delete-pages job, because naming the other one hundred and ninety-seven by hand isn’t an interface anyone would want. When the shorter list is the one you want to keep, the PDF splitter is the same engine pointed the other way.
