What is a lorem ipsum generator?

A lorem ipsum generator produces filler text so you can look at a layout before the real copy exists. Type set with actual sentences invites you to read it; type set with lorem ipsum lets you look at it instead, judging line length, paragraph rhythm and how a typeface holds up at the size you picked. That is the whole job: give you something that occupies space and behaves like prose without asking you to think about what it says.

This generator does the classic Latin version, but it does not stop there. Flip the language pill to English, Spanish, Portuguese, French or Arabic and it draws real words from that language instead, so you can proof the actual accents, character widths and script direction your project will ship with. Set the unit to paragraphs, sentences or words, choose how many, and the text is ready — generated locally, with nothing sent anywhere.

How to use it

1. Pick a language. Choose the Lorem ipsum (Latin) pill for the traditional filler, or switch to English, Spanish, Portuguese, French or Arabic to get real words from that language, accents and all. Latin mode adds a checkbox to start the passage with “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet”, on by default.
2. Set the length. Under Length in, choose Paragraphs, Sentences or Words, then dial in how many with the number box or the slider — up to 30 paragraphs, 60 sentences or 800 words. Tick Wrap paragraphs in p tags if you're pasting straight into HTML.
3. Copy your text. The result updates the instant you change a setting, so there's nothing to run. Hit Copy to grab it (it'll say Copied! for a couple of seconds) or Generate again for a fresh draw, and check the word and character counts underneath.

Where lorem ipsum comes from

By the standard account, lorem ipsum is scrambled Cicero. The passage traces back to De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC, and the words “Lorem ipsum” are what survive of “dolorem ipsum” — Latin for “pain itself” — once the first two letters were dropped. The source was reportedly identified by Richard McClintock at Hampden-Sydney College, and from there the text found its way into a Letraset transfer sheet in the 1960s and later into Aldus PageMaker, which is how a fragment of a two-thousand-year-old philosophical text ended up as the default filler in design software.

The passage everyone copies and pastes — “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor…” — is a fixed, measurable thing: 445 characters, 69 words, only 63 of them distinct. It has been reused so often precisely because it is short, familiar and instantly recognizable as placeholder, which is also its main limitation as a specimen.

When lorem ipsum is the wrong choice

The standard passage never uses the letters j, k, w, y or z. Not once. Set a headline in lorem ipsum and you have proofed every letter except five that are entirely ordinary in English — including w and y, which show up in a huge share of real words. And because the passage is plain Latin, it contains no accented characters at all: no é, ñ, ã, ç or ü, and nothing from a non-Latin script. If your layout has to survive French copy or Arabic copy, Latin lorem ipsum simply never tests it.

That is the case for the real-language modes here: English, Spanish, Portuguese and French will show you accents and the letter frequencies of that language, and Arabic will show you the actual glyphs, Arabic punctuation — the comma ،, the semicolon ؛ and the question mark ؟ — and a right-to-left flow, which is the thing most likely to break a layout that was only ever tested left to right. Every mode draws real words from that language in random order rather than assembling grammatical sentences, and that is deliberate: obvious nonsense gets skimmed as filler, while readable, grammatical nonsense gets mistaken for finished copy that someone forgot to replace.

Even so, know the limits. Placeholder text that ships to production is the most common way this tool causes harm, and nothing here stops that — search your codebase and your CMS before launch. Real-language mode gives you correct glyphs and word-length texture, not realism: actual content has proper nouns, numbers, URLs and long unbroken strings that no generator invents on its own, and those are what actually break a layout in the wild. And if you ask for paragraphs, the word count is just whatever the sentences add up to — pick Words as the unit if you need an exact number. None of this is a licensing question, either: lorem ipsum is two-thousand-year-old Latin with no copyright to worry about, so the argument against using it is about what it fails to show you, not about risk.
