What is on this list?
This is the index for a set of 26 pages, one per letter, together covering 2,871 animals whose common English name has been collected and classified. Instead of guessing which letter to try, start here: pick a letter and land on the animals that begin with it, each one tagged with its class — mammal, bird, reptile, fish, amphibian or invertebrate — rather than just a bare name.
The letters are not evenly sized, and that unevenness is itself information. S, C and B hold hundreds of animals each, while X, Q, U and Z hold a genuine handful. The count shown beside each letter is the real number on that page, so you can see the shape of the English language rather than an attempt to pad every page to the same length.
How this list was built
- Pulled from Wikidata. The full set was built from Wikidata, the public-domain (CC0) database behind much of Wikipedia's structured data, queried once per animal class — mammals, birds, reptiles, ray-finned fish, amphibians, crustaceans, arachnids, and sharks and rays — because one query spanning the entire animal kingdom is too large for the public endpoint to answer.
- Filtered by how widely each animal is known. Every animal had to clear a stated bar: its Wikidata item needed articles in at least 40 different Wikipedia language editions. That keeps household names like the elephant and the octopus while excluding the enormous tail of species that only specialist literature names.
- Filled in the words the first query cannot see, then deduplicated. The taxonomic pass finds vertebrates well and invertebrates barely at all, because Wikidata labels a high-level group by its scientific name — Formicidae, not ant — and words like bee, octopus and zebra are concepts outside the taxonomic chain. Those were added by resolving the scientific name to its item and pairing it with the ordinary English word. Then one animal gets one card per letter: the item’s own label decides which of its several names to show, and a Latin name never beats an English one. That work is automatic; the checking that followed was sampling, not a reading of all 2,871 entries, and the pages say so.
What is missing, and why
Invertebrates remain thinner than vertebrates, for a structural reason rather than a careless one. The taxonomic query that works so well for mammals and birds returns scientific names for insects, molluscs and spiders, because Wikidata records a common name on a species but labels a high-level group by its Latin name. The everyday invertebrate words were added by name instead, which covers what people actually list — ant, bee, beetle, butterfly, crab, octopus, snail — without the long tail of individual species behind them.
A handful of letters are thin for a different and more honest reason: English does not have many animal names that start with X, Q, U or Z. X produced nothing at all at the normal threshold and had to be filled from a lower one, with those entries marked on the page. Any list claiming dozens of entries for those letters is stretching the definition of an animal name. Group words like antelope and monkey cover many species rather than one, so their placement is a judgement call, and animals with more than one common name can legitimately appear on more than one letter's page — which is why the total across all 26 pages is not a headcount of distinct species.
