How this list was built

1. Every entry starts inside Princeton WordNet 3.1. A lexical database built by linguists at Princeton University rather than scraped from the web, which holds 56,933 single-word noun entries once multi-word phrases and hyphenated oddities are set aside.
2. The list is filtered by WordNet's own observed-frequency signal. That is the count of senses per entry which were actually tagged in WordNet's semantic concordance, a body of text hand-marked by lexicographers. Keeping only nouns with at least one observed sense cuts the full inventory down to 9,363, which is what removes most species names, chemical compounds and technical terms while keeping the nouns starting with W that people actually use.
3. Definitions come straight from WordNet's own glosses. They are trimmed to the definition itself with usage examples stripped out, and number words were removed by checking what each entry's gloss defined rather than by its spelling, since a rule built to catch Roman numerals also matches ordinary words like civil and mild. That leaves 9,357 nouns across the 26 letters.

What is missing, and why

Nouns are the largest word class in English, and it shows on pages like this: some letters are short, but S alone holds over a thousand entries, so a long, scrollable W page is the norm here rather than a sign something went wrong. WordNet's noun inventory is also heavily biological and technical, so even after the frequency filter you will meet plant and animal names, anatomy and chemistry terms sitting next to everyday words that start with W — that is what a real lexicon looks like, not padding.

A handful of narrower choices are worth stating outright. Only singular base forms made the cut, so child appears here while children does not, and multi-word nouns are excluded entirely, meaning compounds WordNet treats as nouns — ice cream, post office — never show up even when they would begin with W. The frequency filter is corpus-based rather than web-based, so WordNet's decades-old tagged text misses a few nouns that are common online today and keeps a few that have since fallen out of use, and because WordNet is American English, some British spellings can be missing from the letter you would expect. Definitions are WordNet's own glosses, which are precise but occasionally terser or more technical than a dictionary written for general readers would be. X gets an individual mention for the same reason it does on every list of this kind: it clears only three nouns above the frequency threshold, so that page was topped up from below the line and every entry added that way is marked. Any list claiming dozens of everyday X nouns is padding.

Why is it free?

This page is static: the W list and its definitions were generated once from WordNet and saved, so loading it costs nothing more than serving an ordinary web page — there is no per-visit model call to pay for and nothing to meter.
