What is on this list?

This page lists common English adjectives whose everyday form begins with U, drawn from a real lexical database rather than assembled by hand or scraped from other word lists. Each card pairs the word with a short definition, so if you are hunting for descriptive words that start with U to describe a person, a place or a feeling, you get the meaning alongside the word instead of a bare term you then have to look up elsewhere.

How this list was built

1. Sourced from Princeton WordNet 3.1. Every word on this page comes from WordNet, a lexical database built and maintained by linguists at Princeton University rather than scraped from other websites. WordNet holds 21,499 adjective entries in total, of which 20,706 are single alphabetic words once hyphenated numerals, multi-word phrases and similar entries are set aside.
2. Filtered by WordNet's own frequency signal. Each entry records how many of its senses were actually observed in WordNet's semantic concordance, a body of text hand-tagged by lexicographers. Keeping only adjectives with at least one observed sense cuts those 20,706 entries down to 5,085, which is what removes the long tail of technical and rare terms while keeping the words people actually use.
3. Numbers removed, definitions taken from WordNet's glosses. WordNet classes cardinal numbers and Roman numerals as adjectives — “xcii: being two more than ninety” is a real entry — which is correct lexicography and useless on a page of descriptive words, so those were dropped by their definition rather than their spelling, since a spelling rule for Roman numerals also matches ordinary words like “civil” and “mild”. The definition on each remaining card is WordNet's own gloss for that word's first and most common sense, trimmed to the definition itself. Across all 26 letters the pages hold 5,073 adjectives.

What is missing, and why

WordNet counts participles as adjectives, so words like abandoned, abbreviated and aching show up alongside more classic descriptive words. They do function as adjectives in real sentences, but a reader expecting only the traditional kind will notice the difference. Multi-word adjectives are excluded for a more mechanical reason: WordNet includes entries like well-known and run-of-the-mill, but this list only covers single words, so anything with a space in the middle is left out no matter how common it is.

The frequency filter is corpus-based rather than web-based. It comes from text that lexicographers tagged decades ago, so a handful of adjectives that are common online today are missing, and a few that read as dated made the cut. WordNet is also American English, so British spellings can be absent from the letter you expect — colored is here, coloured is not — and only base forms are included, meaning bigger and biggest do not appear even though big does. Two letters need a specific note: X has no adjectives at all once the frequency filter is applied, and Z has only two, so both were topped up with lower-frequency entries that are marked as such rather than presented as if they cleared the same bar. Treat any list claiming dozens of native X adjectives with suspicion.
